*NOTES FROM TOM
Well we’ve settled into our new area and we’re gearing up for lots of great things in the next couple of weeks and for the summer.
On Saturday we’re holding our first ever bowling tournament/fundraiser at Strathmore Lanes on Route 34 in Matawan. We “roll” at 9:30pm.There’s lots of fun to be had by all. Remember you don’t need to be part of a league to sign-up…you don’t even have to be good (that’s one of the reasons the jocks are bowling). You can find out more here: http://events.publicbroadcasting.net/thenight/events.eventsmain?action=showEvent&eventID=416348.
We’re just about to process the order for the Spring Local Music Sampler (see announcement in section below). And we’re gearing up for a lot of events in the summer you will see some of them in the “Mark your calendars” section of the newsletter. I also want to let you know that we’re in the final stages of booking a GREAT line-up for the ?K. Hovnanian Songwriters in the Park?. It’s still happening at Riverside Gardens Park in Red Bank and we’ve moved the show to Friday nights and added more nights, seven in all.
Make sure to tune in for announcements on the air about “Live at The NIGHT Volume 3″ which is coming. Think of some of the great interviews we’ve had at the studios and picture some of the songs from the interviews all on one CD.
Also, if any of you guys have a myspace account make sure to add the station to your list of friends. You can find us at http://www.myspace.com/wbjb.

* ALBUM OF THE MONTH

JOSH RITTER The Animal Years V2 Records

29 year old Idaho native Josh Ritter has finally released his third album, ?The Animal Years.? Continuing to mature and grow as a songwriter, he has now staked his claim as one of the best young American songwriters recording today. After receiving nothing but praise for his previous independent records, ?Golden Age Of Radio? and ?Hello Starling,? this new album will certainly garner nothing but raves. In fact, it already has…from the New York Times no less. Though he does draw influence from Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Simon & Garfunkel, he is more than just an acoustic guitar-toting troubadour. Having used the same band members for the last few years, it comes across as a ?band? album. But the arrangements still leave you with the idea that you’ve just listened to a ?songwriter.? As the story goes, both of Josh’s parents were neuroscientists and he could have followed in their footsteps if only he’d never heard Dylan’s ?Nashville Skyline? album as an 18 year old. A!
nd sometimes he does come off as that guy that’s just too smart for his own good, covering such topics as love, war, faith, music, restlessness and a longing for home, but they’re wrapped around such wonderful melodies that the words seem like they’re another instrument in the mix, and he sings them with nothing but honesty and passion.

See Josh live at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC on May 4 & 5 with Hem opening up.

HEADLINES FROM PUBLIC NEWSROOM

IRAN
Iran’s president says the country will ignore renewed international calls to halt uranium enrichment, and his announcement is casting a shadow over today’s visit for nuclear talks by the head of the U.N. atomic watchdog. For more on the situation in Iran, visit our NewsRoom online at 90.5TheNIGHT.org.

IRAQ
Saddam Hussein, and his cousin — nicknamed Chemical Ali — face charges of genocide over a brutal seven-month campaign in the late 80s. More than 100,000 Kurds died or disappeared in the Anfal campaign, and it still haunts the region and its people. Plans to try Hussein for genocide have opened old wounds, and at the same time have raised hopes of justice. For an in-depth look at this story, visit our NewsRoom online at 90.5TheNIGHT.org.

HEADLINES FROM ARTS

CAT POWER
“The Greatest” is a new album from Chan Marshall, professionally known as ?Cat Power.? Despite the record?s title, it?s not a greatest hits album, but rather a collection of all-original blues-bar standards written by Marshall and performed with the help of Memphis-soul session musicians. Find out more about the album and how this musical direction works for the indie-pop star, in the public Arts section of our web site at 90.5TheNIGHT.org or this link: http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/thenight/arts.artsmain?action=viewArticle&sid=4&id=900768

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH
In April we celebrate National Poetry Month. It’s a month dedicated to learning about poetry, celebrating and recognizing poets for their work, and reclaiming poetry as part of our lives. Join us in celebrating National Poetry Month in the Public Arts section of our website at 90.5TheNIGHT.org or this link: http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/thenight/arts.artsmain
