NOTES FROM TOM
December is usually a pretty crazy month for all of us. Here at the station, it’s no different. We have lots of great stuff in store and hope you’ll come along for the ride.
We’re working on completely redesigning our website. This new version may make ours the best looking and most interactive radio website you’ve ever seen. We’re all excited about this. This new version will be available soon.
With the holiday season comes all sorts of special benefit shows in the area. Make sure to check out the calendar at the bottom of this message to see which one’s we’ll be at. Hopefully you’ll be able to make some time to show up to at least one in between all of your shopping and cooking.
We also have some great programming coming your way at the end of the month. We will be bringing you our own special brand of holiday music in the next few weeks throughout the day. On December 24th we will be going all-out with the holiday music and continue this programming throughout December 25th. On New Year’s Eve we will be counting down the Top 90 Albums of the year, as voted by you. If you haven’t done so, please head to our website and vote for your top 10 albums. At the stroke of midnight on New Years we will be playing the #1 album in it’s entirety.
ALBUM OF THE MONTH
Damien Rice 9 Vector/Warner Brothers
Not many singer/songwriters can pack as much emotion into an album as Damien Rice can. Or as quietly as he can. The long awaited follow up to his surprise hit album “O” from 2003 is finally here. Three years later he delivers “9.” He ventures into territory that he didn’t on “O” – most of the album is centered around piano accompaniment, even full-blown electric guitar here and there instead of solely acoustic guitar. There are fewer appearances by his vocal partner Lisa Hannigan. There are more strings used than before, previously from cellist Vyvienne Long alone. But there is still what has perhaps become his signature…whispered vocals that eventually soar into some of the loudest vocals you’re ever likely to hear from a “singer/songwriter.” First single “9 Crimes” is typical of this. As are the stellar “The Animals Are Gone,” “Elephant,” and “Dogs.” He also supplies us with perhaps the angriest relationship song to ever start out “pretty” in “Rootless Tree.” Suffice to say I can’t quote any lyrics here.

Judge dismisses suit against Michael Moore (2006-12-21)
BOSTON (Reuters) – A U.S. federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit by an Iraq war veteran who claimed filmmaker Michael Moore used the veteran’s image without permission in the anti-war documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11.”
According to court papers, Judge Douglas Woodlock of U.S. District Court in Massachusetts dismissed the suit on Wednesday. It had sought $35 million in damages from Moore, as well as Miramax, which is owned by Walt Disney Co. and several other film companies.
The film showed Iraq war veteran Sgt. Peter Damon, who had lost his right arm near the shoulder and much of his left arm, lying in a hospital gurney at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Maryland, saying that he feels pain but that pain-killers given him “take a lot of the edge” off of it.
The video clip was originally used by NBC Nightly News for a story about medical treatment for veterans. In Moore’s film, it followed a statement by Democratic Rep. Jim McDermott of Washington that “they’re leaving all kinds of veterans behind.”
