SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – There could be some new rules for members of online virtual worlds like Second Life or There.com. IBM appears to be the first corporation to create guidelines for employees who have avatars in such worlds. Many of the rules mirror real-world mores: No discrimination. No harassment. No discussion of intellectual property with unauthorized people. But other guidelines advise users to be mindful of the appearance and actions of their avatars while conducting IBM business. Big Blue and other companies have been using virtual worlds to hold meetings with employees and customers worldwide. Critics say the rules seem stodgy. But IBM says the rules encourage ethical behavior in worlds where people play out rude fantasies. YOUTUBE AIMING TO CURB COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
NEW YORK (AP) – YouTube is hoping to wiggle out of any more copyright lawsuits with new technology to keep users from posting copyrighted videos on the Web site. A lawyer for the site tells a federal judge that YouTube is working with major content providers on video recognition technology that’s as sophisticated as the F-B-I’s fingerprint technology. The lawyer says the company is aiming to have the technology in place in September. YouTube is being sued by Viacom, England’s top soccer league and an indie music publisher in for alleged copyright infringement. Lawyers for the plaintiffs say they welcome any improvements that would end alleged infringement, but say that YouTube should have acted |
