NJ Lawmakers: Make Landlords Pay for Bedbugs

Landlords in New Jersey may soon be entirely responsible for keeping apartments and homes free of
bedbugs.
It’s part of legislation introduced by Democratic Assembly members Joan Quigley, L. Grace Spencer and L. Harvey Smith. They cite instances of tenants being charged with extermination costs, which can run into the hundreds of dollars.
Under the bill, landlords would have to exterminate bedbugs at their own expense when an outbreak occurs. Those who don’t could face fines of $300 per infested apartment and $1,000 per infested
common area.
The measure would also allow local health boards to conduct exterminations and bill unresponsive landlords.
