Students Hit The Air

We’re ending our semester here at Brookdale and all of the staff of the station have helped the students in Radio 101.  Now’s about the time we let the students help us out while gaining some valuable experience on the air.  We’ve crafted quite a number of locally produced features that will start to run in the near future that spotlight some of the best of the Radio class.  We’ve had a lot of fun with them over the past few months and we’re sure you’ll hear it when their peices start to hit the air.  Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Programming

Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT is proud to announce the continuation of a long-standing Thanksgiving tradition:  airing Arlo Guthrie’s 1969 Classic “Alice’s Restaurant”, in it’s entirety, commercial free, this Thanksgiving at 12 Noon.
Adding to the traditional Holiday buffet, Brookdale Public Radio will also air “Lumpy Gravy”, Frank Zappa’s sonic symphony, at 6 PM.
This Holiday, share Thanksgiving with Arlo and Frank, and Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT.

90.5 The NIGHT Wins Again

For the eighth year in a row, Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT has been recognized for its continuing support of local Monmouth County musicians, by winning the coveted Asbury Music Award’s “Top Radio Station (To Support Local Music)” at the annual celebration of local music held at the legendary Stone Pony Saturday night.
“We are delighted to win this award”, said Tom Brennan, Station Manager.  He added, “Our service to the local community is something we are proud of and our support of local music is a huge part of that.”
90.5 The NIGHT has gained its reputation for backing the efforts of the local music scene by continually giving unsigned musicians a platform for their art to be heard. This commitment goes beyond it’s on-air reach.
This past year the station launched “The Local Music Project”, which offers a podcast that spotlights local musicians like Bobby Strange, James Dalton, April Smith and others.
The staff of Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT, is grateful to all of those who showed their appreciation of WBJB’s commitment to local music by voting for us as the Top Radio Station, for the eighth year in a row.

The Voting Booth Opens Friday
Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT is taking votes for the Top 90 albums of 2008.  Listeners can log on to 90.5TheNight.org to cast their votes.  Voting closes at 11:59pm on Sunday December 21st.  More information on submitting is available at 90.5TheNight.org.  90.5 The NIGHT will air the Top 90 of 2008 on New Years Eve concluding the countdown at midnight when it will play the #1 album in it’s entirety.
This year marked another incredible year of music.  Some of the albums that hit the 90.5 The NIGHT airwaves include: Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”, “Accelerate” from REM, Ani DiFranco’s “Red Letter Year”, “Modern Guilt” from Beck, and “Little Honey” from Lucinda Williams.

Album of the Month
The Gaslight Anthem, a band from New Brunswick NJ, just might have the best album of 2008. Though they’ve only been around for a few years (this is only their second album), they have already proven themselves to be one of the punk underground’s most celebrated acts. While you can certainly hear the influence of bands like The Clash and Green Day in their music, how many punk rock bands would so brazenly and proudly cite Bruce Springsteen, Counting Crows, Miles Davis and Tom Petty as musical touchstones? As well as name-drop (or quote) them.
You may have already heard the title track (one of the best songs about the death of a friend ever), “Film Noir,” or “The Patient Ferris Wheel” on 90.5 The NIGHT. The album also boasts stellar tracks like “High Lonesome,” “Miles Davis & The Cool,” “Meet Me By The River’s Edge” (referring to the Navasink), and “The Backseat.”
Check them out on Conan O’Brien December 9 or opening for Bouncing Souls at the Stone Pony on December 28 (if it’s open again by then). Also, lead singer Brian Fallon (a native of Red Bank) will be a special guest at Jesse Malin’s Xmas show at the Bowery Ballroom on December 19.
