JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Officials in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, are hoping to restore the house where bluesman Robert Johnson was born. Johnson’s grave has never been verified, but his birthplace is known. He was born in 1911 in a house that his stepfather built. It’s a 1,500-square-foot house that has a double parlor, a long front porch and a pump that allowed water to flow into the kitchen, which was a rarity for black families in that era. Officials hope to raise $250,000 to restore the house. Those efforts could get a boost if a proposed movie about Johnson’s life gets off the ground. A script is already written by Jimmy White, the man who wrote the screenplay for the film “Ray.”
