New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has announced $934 million in additional cuts to the current state budget.

Gov.-elect Chris Christie, meanwhile, has asked his transition team to draw up plans to cut state government spending by as much as 25 percent in the budget year that begins July 1.

Corzine’s cuts include $5 million for cancer research and $2.3 million in charter school aid. They are needed to keep the current budget in balance as required by law.

The revised $28.6 billion budget will allow $20 million in delayed municipal tax relief payments to be released to cities and towns and allows an income tax surcharge on the wealthy to sunset on Dec. 31.

Christie says he wants recommendations on state programs that can be trimmed or eliminated.
