TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gov. Chris Christie has rescinded an executive order that put a 90-day hold on activities of the state’s affordable housing council.
The order was being challenged in court. An appeals court judge recently prevented it from going into effect.
Christie had ordered the freeze Feb. 9 to apply while a task force he created to review the Council on Affordable Housing, or COAH (COE’-uh), did its work.
The Fair Share Housing Center challenged the executive order on constitutional grounds, questioning whether Christie had the power to do it.
New Jersey courts have ruled that towns have an obligation to provide housing for lower-income people. COAH was formed to implement those rulings, but many municipal officials have criticized its work.
