At just 32, former child prodigy Joe Bonamassa has just released 10th and latest solo record, “Black Rock”.
“Black Rock” is a very solid blues-rock album that shows why Bonamassa’s musicianship was touted at such a young age.
On first listen, Bonamassa’s voice reminds me a lot of Gregg Allman and you can hear not only bit of the Allman Brothers band on “Black Rock” but also a bit of the blues side of Led Zeppelin as well. You also hear how much legends like Eric Clapton and BB King, who Bonamassa has opened for in the past, have had on him. King makes a guest appearance on “Black Rock”, helping Bonamassa put an awesome spin of Willie Nelson’s “Night Life.”
You can heard a bit of a Mediterranean feel on the album, as that stems from the album being recorded at the Black Rock Studios in Santori, Greece. You can hear the influence that the surroundings had on Bonamassa on the cover of Jeff Beck’s “Spanish Boots” and other songs on the album like “Bird On A Wire.”
Fans of blues should get this album immediately as they will not be disappointed. Bonamassa’s “Black Rock” is fine example of blues’ past and how far it can go into the future. ****
