ACTIVISTS DETAINED AT U2′S MOSCOW SHOW

MOSCOW (AP) — Moscow police have detained five Amnesty International activists who were passing out leaflets before U2′s first-ever Russian concert Wednesday. The activists were collecting signatures for petitions pressing Russian authorities to investigate the murders of a journalist and a human rights activist. A Moscow police spokesman says the activists were detained because they did not have the necessary authorization. They were released after several hours. The head of Amnesty International’s Moscow office says U2 management had assured the group before the show that all necessary permits were in place. Russian police routinely detain rights activists.
