GOOGLE SEEKS TO REPLACE WALLET WITH SMARTPHONES

NEW YORK (AP) – These days, for most connected people, the two most important things to carry around is a smartphone and a wallet. Google is trying to whittle that number down to just one – a smartphone. The Internet search company is trying to find a way to get people to use their phones as an all-in-one device. For example Google envisions a time when shoppers can touch their phone screen to select the card they want to use – then share the information with a credit card reader in a store or restaurant. And Google will make money by selling coupons and ads that come along for the ride. Google isn’t the first to come up with the idea. Cell phone companies, Visa, PayPal and others also have plans to develop what essentially will be a digital wallet.
