NEW JERSEY COURT SAYS MESSAGE BOARD POSTERS NOT JOURNALISTS

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – The New Jersey Supreme Court says a person who posts to online message boards is not a journalist. And as a result, the court says, they don’t have the same protections as mainstream journalists when it comes to keeping their sources secret. In an unanimous ruling, the court ruled that the New Jersey shield law provides protection to the news media – but is not so broad that it applies to those who post on message boards. The ruling is a defeat for a Washington state woman who was sued for defamation for postings she made about a New Jersey software company.
