Wildwood drops beach fee vote

WILDWOOD, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey town that doesn’t charge beach fees will keep its beaches free this summer.

Wildwood officials on Wednesday voted to rescind a ballot question that would have put a beach fee question before voters next month.

Officials had said the fees were needed to help maintain the beaches and for the budget.

However, local businesses didn’t support the fees and neighboring Wildwood Crest and North Wildwood said they had no plans to charge.

Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. tells The Press of Atlantic City (http://bit.ly/XCVBSE ) the town is considering sharing services and holding more events as a way to offset costs.

City voters rejected beach fees in 1976 and 1981.
