NJ’s Powerball winner owes $29K in child support

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey man who won the $338 million Powerball jackpot owes approximately $29,000 in child support.

Authorities stopped by Pedro Quezada’s Passaic apartment yesterday, one day after the 44-year-old claimed a lump-sum payment worth $221 million, or about $152 million after taxes. No one answered the door.

In an email, Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik tells The Record newspaper generally the state Lottery Division would satisfy the judgment before all the winnings are released. Berdnik says Quezada is subject to potential arrest like everyone else until the warrant is satisfied.

A Sheriff’s Department spokesman says the unpaid child support payments go back to 2009. It’s not known which of Quezada’s five children are covered under the payments.

The small store where Quezada worked is up for sale.
