NJ ACLU renews gay marriage push under new leader

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has renewed its push to legalize gay marriage in the state under a new executive director.

The boosted efforts come a year after Republican Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a bill that would have allowed gay couples to marry and weeks after Democratic legislative leaders agreed to work to override the veto.

The NJCLU’s new leader, Udi Ofer, took over six weeks ago. He previously worked at the New York Civil Liberties Union when it was trying to legalize gay marriage there.

Ofer says the group plans to mobilize supporters in swing districts and to lobby lawmakers.

Civil unions are legal in New Jersey. Christie favors them over gay marriage but has urged legislators to put the marriage issue on the ballot.
