Roller coaster submerged by Sandy may be removed

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) — A roller coaster swept off a Jersey Shore amusement pier by Superstorm Sandy and partially submerged in the ocean could soon be pulled from the water.

The Asbury Park Press reports the Casino Pier in Seaside Heights has signed a contract with Weeks Marine of Cranford to remove the remains of the Jet Star rollercoaster and other rides.

Casino Pier spokeswoman Toby Wolf says a timeline for completing the work has not been finalized, and the timing of the project will largely depend on the weather.

Once the work begins, officials say it could take seven days to remove the rollercoaster, while the overall project could take a few months. But before the work can start, a hydrographic survey will be done to determine what lies below the pier.
