LONDON (AP) – Mark Knopfler has called off two shows in Russia to protest the country’s human rights. Knopfler was supposed to play in Moscow and in St. Petersburg in June. He says he has always loved playing in Russia but he is pushing back against what he calls a crackdown on human rights groups in Russia. Russian authorities have raided hundreds of n o n-governmental organizations to make sure they comply with a law requiring many of them to register as “foreign agents.” The government says it’s meant to curb foreign meddling, but critics say it stifles dissent.
