NJ college allows men in dorms for first time

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — Men have moved in for the first time in a New Jersey college’s 105-year history.

Georgian Court University became fully coeducational with the arrival of 70 men in a residence hall on the Lakewood campus Thursday. Many are athletes.

The school has offered coed graduate classes at night since 1979. It announced last year that it would accept males for day and evening courses and allow them to live on school grounds.

President Sister Rosemary Jeffries tells the Asbury Park Press the freshman class of about 206 nearly doubled from last year.

Freshman Joe Kaas of Frederick, Md., says it’s kind of cool being first.

Georgian Court is located about 60 miles from New York City and Philadelphia and occupies land that once belonged to financier George Jay Gould.
