Armed NJ man who spurred school lockdown dies

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say an armed man who shot himself during a confrontation with police in Southern New Jersey has died.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office says Robert F. Terry was pronounced dead at 12:55 p.m. Thursday at Jersey Shore Medical Center.

The 33-year-old Port Monmouth resident shot himself Wednesday morning in Point Pleasant Beach.

The incident happened as police were attempting to question Terry about a domestic violence incident that had occurred Tuesday night in nearby Brick Township.

Authorities say Terry tried to flee the officers and ended up on the roof of a building, where he shot himself in the head with a handgun.

The matter spurred a precautionary lockdown of schools in Point Pleasant and Point Pleasant Beach on Wednesday. Authorities say students were never in any imminent danger.
