Ex-lawyer sentenced for stealing from clients

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) — A former New Jersey lawyer who admitted stealing from a dead woman’s estate and embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from his clients has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Monmouth County prosecutors say 39-year-old Alexander Iler also will pay a $530,886 civil judgment as part of his plea deal. The sentence was handed down Monday and made public Tuesday.

Iler, whose legal office was in Red Bank, had pleaded guilty to several counts of theft. Prosecutors say he fraudulently assumed ownership of a dead woman’s Middletown property by forging his signature on a deed, then used the property to secure a mortgage.

Iler also admitted stealing more than $500,000 from clients.
