Big Brothers – Big Sisters is a popular non-profit organization throughout America with a branch in Monmouth County. The organization looks to take children who are suffering from emotional, social, and academic disadvantages and make a difference. Through this organization, the suffering children will be paired up with an adult Big Brother or Big Sister to help lead them down a path of confidence and able adulthood.
The children and their Big brother or Big Sister experience a one-on-one relationship in which the adult advises and guides the child to be the best they can possibly be. The organization started locally in Tinton Falls when a man Curtis Colby befriended a boy named Joey who recently lost his father. Through this relationship Curtis saw how important relationships are to young people who need guidance and decided to contact the Monmouth County Division of Social Services and as a result the Monmouth County branch of Big Brothers and Big Sisters was created in 1976.
The program helps a variety of youth including children with a parent in jail, either one or both parents involved in drugs, or residing with a grandparent. As a result of the program 58% did better in school, 91% stayed in school, 75% had better confidence, 50% showed improvement in making decisions, and 50% improved in peer relationships.
