TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Former Senate candidate Steve Lonegan has decided to run for Congress, just months after he declared he was done with seeking elective office.
The former mayor of Bogota says he will soon move from that Bergen County community to Lavallette in Ocean County. He plans to seek the 3rd Congressional District seat now held by fellow Republican Jon Runyan, who is not seeking re-election after serving two terms.
The staunch conservative joins several Republicans who have said they may or will seek the seat. But Burlington County Freeholder Aimee Belgaard is the only declared Democratic candidate for the seat so far.
On the night he lost the special U.S. Senate election to Democrat Cory Booker last October, Lonegan had said he would not run for office again.
