TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — Ocean County authorities have arrested a 27-year-old Toms River man in last month’s hit-and-run death of an 84-year-old pedestrian.
Joseph Marsh was arrested Friday at his lawyer’s office in Jersey City. He’s charged with vehicular homicide, leaving an accident scene, evidence tampering and hindering. Bail has been set at $200,000.
The accident occurred in South Toms River on Dec. 16. Victim William Gaughan was struck while crossing an intersection near a 7-Eleven, and was pronounced dead a few hours later at a hospital.
The Ocean County prosecutor’s office says Marsh was talking on his cellphone at the time of the accident. He also allegedly replaced a damaged windshield and removed identifying documents from the car.
Marsh’s attorney said the charges are without merit and his client will be vindicated.
