TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — Kidnapping and sexual assault charges have been filed against a man who allegedly held a woman against her will inside a southern New Jersey motel.
Steen Tarpley of Toms River also faces aggravated assault charges stemming from Sunday’s incident in Toms River. His bail was set at $500,000 cash and it wasn’t known Monday if he has retained a lawyer.
Ocean County prosecutors say the 48-year-old Tarpley knew the 31-year-old victim, but did not provide further details about their relationship. It’s also not clear how long the woman was held at the hotel.
The woman suffered multiple superficial stab wounds and was hospitalized in stable condition.
Tarpley had fled the hotel by the time police arrived, but he was captured a short time later at a nearby bus stop.
