NY senator: Congress must reform Port Authority

NEW YORK (AP) — Sen. Charles Schumer is proposing an Act of Congress to reform the scandal-ridden Port Authority that runs bridges, tunnels and airports.

The Democratic senator said Monday that the New York-New Jersey agency has become a political “cookie jar” whose core public mission has been forgotten.

The senator wants a single executive director to be appointed instead of shared leadership resulting in what he calls state “tribalism.”

Schumer says the scandal involving lane closures on the George Washington Bridge is a symptom of a secretive, dysfunctional institution.

He proposes that commissioners be picked for their expertise, not their political links. And he says more transparency in Port Authority finances and contracts could reduce conflicts of interest.

The Port Authority did not immediately respond to a comment request.
