Harsh winter took toll on Port Authority budget

NEW YORK (AP) — Last winter took a toll on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s finances.

Overtime numbers were released for the first quarter on Wednesday, and the weather was blamed for pushing civilian overtime 200,000 hours over budget.

The Port Authority’s director of management and budget says the budget was based on the last five winters. But last winter featured 22 snow events and dumped more than twice the average amount of snowfall on the area.

Most of the overtime was paid out at the tunnels and bridges, airports and the PATH rail system.

On the positive side, police overtime was 38,000 hours over budget, or about 14 percent. That’s far lower than in recent quarters.

The Port Authority didn’t provide dollar amounts for the overtime hours paid.
