Suspect Sandy charity Distributes funds

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A Superstorm Sandy charity that was suspected of fraud has finished distributing $325,000 under a settlement with New Jersey prosecutors.

The unregistered Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation distributed $100,000 to two groups in Monmouth County. That’s on top of $225,000 that was given in April to four charitable organizations in New Jersey and one in New York.

New Jersey’s acting attorney general says the money will bring relief to low-income families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Sandy.

Officials in New Jersey sued the foundation and its operators in February 2013, claiming they used donations for personal expenses and failed to properly register as a charity.

The state reached a settlement last June.
