FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man already in prison for aggravated manslaughter is set to go on trial for allegedly trying to have a county prosecutor murdered.
Opening statements in the trial of Jay Goldberg are expected to begin Tuesday in Monmouth County.
Goldberg, formerly of Little Egg Harbor, was convicted in 2012 of killing a man with whom he operated a marijuana growing facility. Later that year, an inmate in the Ocean County jail contacted authorities and said Goldberg had solicited him to murder Supervising Ocean County Prosecutor Steven Cucci.
Prosecutors say an undercover detective subsequently recorded incriminating conversations with Goldberg.
Goldberg is charged with attempted murder and murder conspiracy.
His attorney couldn’t be reached by phone Saturday.
