NJ man fined $21K for illegal dumping in park

LACEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A garbage run has proved to be costly for a southern New Jersey man.

The state’s Department of Environmental Protection has fined a Seaside Heights man more than $21,000 for illegally dumping eight garbage bags full of asbestos siding shingles and other debris in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area.

Twenty-five-year-old Adam Wardell of Seaside Heights pleaded guilty June 17.

A conservation officer discovered the bags in late April and was able to determine Wardell had put them there.

The Asbury Park Press reports the DEP uses motion-sensor cameras in some state parks and wildlife management areas to detect illegal activity.

Illegal dumping is punishable by up to $5,000 in criminal fines per violation.
