FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) — A central New Jersey man who allegedly was driving drunk when his car crashed earlier this year, killing a passenger, has been charged with vehicular homicide.
Monmouth County prosecutors say bail has been set at $75,000 cash for 20-year-old Joseph Gonsalves of Howell Township, who turned himself in on Monday. He also received several motor vehicle citations stemming from the April 16 crash in Howell.
Prosecutors say Gonsalves was drunk and speeding when his car crashed on Alexander Avenue. Gonsalves and a front-seat passenger were not hurt in the crash, but a 21-year man sitting in the back seat was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital.
It was not known Tuesday if Gonsalves has retained a lawyer.
