FREEHOLD (NJ.com) - A Long Branch man was indicted on attempted murder and weapons charges for allegedly shooting a man in Red Bank in April, authorities said.
Anthony Sims Jr., 25, was charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and second-degree certain persons not to possess weapons.
Sims is accused of shooting 28-year-old Perry Veney on Willow Street at around 6:50 p.m. on April 9, authorities said. Veney had “multiple” gunshot wounds on his body and was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he was given life saving treatment, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
The gunman was standing on a sidewalk in front of a home as Veney was sitting in a car in a driveway, according to Red Bank police Chief Darren McConnell. Sims was arrested on April 14, authorities said.
Monmouth County First Assistant Prosecutor Marc LeMieux said the shooting didn’t appear to be random.
