FREEHOLD (NJ.com) – An Avon-by-the-Sea man is accused dealing heroin to a resident of a Rumson drug rehabilitation center that ultimately led to his overdose death in October, authorities said Tuesday.
Michael Renna, 25, was charged with first-degree strict liability for drug induced deaths and third-degree distribution of a controlled dangerous substance.
On Oct. 13, police responded to Oxford House in Rumson at around 8:15 p.m. and found the body of 25-year-old Christopher Pesce, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. Toxicology results showed Pesce died from acute heroin toxicity, authorities said.
The Rumson Police Department and prosecutor’s office investigated the death and determined that Renna dealt the fatal dose of heroin to Pesce in Asbury Park on Oct. 12, authorities said.
The strict liability charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, authorities said.
