NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Cancellations and delays continue to plague New Jersey’s rail commuters, a year after similar issues led officials to vow to fix the problem.
An engineer shortage has contributed to a spike in cancellations in recent weeks.
New Jersey Transit says 373 trains were cancelled in June, a 52 percent increase from a year ago. That’s after they decreased earlier in the year.
Executive Director Kevin Corbett says he’s cracked down on abuses of unscheduled engineer absences that snarled operations last summer. NJ Transit didn’t give details Wednesday on what effect that’s had.
The chairman of the engineers union didn’t respond to messages seeking comment.
Problems with Amtrak’s infrastructure also have contributed to the recent cancellations and delays.
