Thanks To Our Members

If you are a member of 90.5 The NIGHT you should have received your gifts in the mail this week. Thank you for supporting the station!

Students Hit The Air

We’re ending our semester here at Brookdale and all of the staff of the station have helped the students in Radio 101.  Now’s about the time we let the students help us out while gaining some valuable experience on the air.  We’ve crafted quite a number of locally produced features that will start to run in the near future that spotlight some of the best of the Radio class.  We’ve had a lot of fun with them over the past few months and we’re sure you’ll hear it when their peices start to hit the air.  Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Programming

Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT is proud to announce the continuation of a long-standing Thanksgiving tradition:  airing Arlo Guthrie’s 1969 Classic “Alice’s Restaurant”, in it’s entirety, commercial free, this Thanksgiving at 12 Noon.
Adding to the traditional Holiday buffet, Brookdale Public Radio will also air “Lumpy Gravy”, Frank Zappa’s sonic symphony, at 6 PM.
This Holiday, share Thanksgiving with Arlo and Frank, and Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT.

90.5 The NIGHT Wins Again

For the eighth year in a row, Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT has been recognized for its continuing support of local Monmouth County musicians, by winning the coveted Asbury Music Award’s “Top Radio Station (To Support Local Music)” at the annual celebration of local music held at the legendary Stone Pony Saturday night.
“We are delighted to win this award”, said Tom Brennan, Station Manager.  He added, “Our service to the local community is something we are proud of and our support of local music is a huge part of that.”
90.5 The NIGHT has gained its reputation for backing the efforts of the local music scene by continually giving unsigned musicians a platform for their art to be heard. This commitment goes beyond it’s on-air reach.
This past year the station launched “The Local Music Project”, which offers a podcast that spotlights local musicians like Bobby Strange, James Dalton, April Smith and others.
The staff of Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT, is grateful to all of those who showed their appreciation of WBJB’s commitment to local music by voting for us as the Top Radio Station, for the eighth year in a row.

The Voting Booth Opens Friday
Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT is taking votes for the Top 90 albums of 2008.  Listeners can log on to 90.5TheNight.org to cast their votes.  Voting closes at 11:59pm on Sunday December 21st.  More information on submitting is available at 90.5TheNight.org.  90.5 The NIGHT will air the Top 90 of 2008 on New Years Eve concluding the countdown at midnight when it will play the #1 album in it’s entirety.
This year marked another incredible year of music.  Some of the albums that hit the 90.5 The NIGHT airwaves include: Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”, “Accelerate” from REM, Ani DiFranco’s “Red Letter Year”, “Modern Guilt” from Beck, and “Little Honey” from Lucinda Williams.

Album of the Month
The Gaslight Anthem, a band from New Brunswick NJ, just might have the best album of 2008. Though they’ve only been around for a few years (this is only their second album), they have already proven themselves to be one of the punk underground’s most celebrated acts. While you can certainly hear the influence of bands like The Clash and Green Day in their music, how many punk rock bands would so brazenly and proudly cite Bruce Springsteen, Counting Crows, Miles Davis and Tom Petty as musical touchstones? As well as name-drop (or quote) them.
You may have already heard the title track (one of the best songs about the death of a friend ever), “Film Noir,” or “The Patient Ferris Wheel” on 90.5 The NIGHT. The album also boasts stellar tracks like “High Lonesome,” “Miles Davis & The Cool,” “Meet Me By The River’s Edge” (referring to the Navasink), and “The Backseat.”
Check them out on Conan O’Brien December 9 or opening for Bouncing Souls at the Stone Pony on December 28 (if it’s open again by then). Also, lead singer Brian Fallon (a native of Red Bank) will be a special guest at Jesse Malin’s Xmas show at the Bowery Ballroom on December 19.

ALBUM OF THE MONTH: Misadventures In Stereo

Once a member of 4 Way Street, Jim Boggia has just released his third album “Misadventures In Stereo.” Often considered a modern master at pop songcraft, this album shows Boggia hitting new highs. Tracks like “Johnnie’s Going Down,” “To And Fro,” “8 Track,” and “Listening To NRBQ” (with special guest NRBQ’s Al Anderson!) are proof that he’s getting even better. Recorded with a core of some of Philly’s best musicians, as opposed to the cavalcade of all-star guests that his previous albums had, he’s made a tighter and more cohesive album this time. The self-confessed record junkie even conceived the album as a record of two sides, though most will listen to all 10 tracks in sequence without stopping after five to turn the record over. He even has a special “monophonic” mix of the album for the vinyl version.
Catch him live at the Borders Emerging Artist Series (and pick up a copy of the album!) at the Borders on Route 35 in Eatontown on Tuesday September 9.

REASONS BEHIND THE PROGRAMMING CHANGE

Many of you have called or e-mailed about the changes on 90.5 the NIGHT, namely the absence of NPR programs to the program schedule. The truth of the matter is that we have increasing fixed costs regarding the operation of the station. These fixed costs depend on a guaranteed revenue stream. Our fixed revenue stream includes funding from Brookdale Community College and a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Other revenue comes from membership which is always a variable, sometimes to the extreme. Much of our fixed revenue goes towards the purchase of programs and operating the station. Our other income from membership dollars has been an inconsistent source that makes it almost impossible to plan a solid operating budget year after year.

Based on the increasing costs of purchasing programs like “Morning Edition”, All Things Considered” and “Weekend Edition”, the decision was made to reduce spending on this type of programming so that more fixed income can go towards the operation of the station, localizing our news & information, and remaining solvent. The NPR Programs that we once offered are on other stations in the area.

Many of you have asked why not just tell members we need more money? We have done this in the past with additional drives, but how many times can we go to well before the well runs dry? Logically, we were facing a pledge drive every month just to stay ahead and honestly how many of you would have become turned off by constant radio drives?

With that said, here is what you can still count on at Brookdale Public Radio 90.5 The NIGHT:
•           We are still a membership station.
•           We are still an NPR member station - we’ve added NPR Newscasts to the music programming that airs hourly though out the day.
•           We still air local news, weather, and morning traffic reports.
•           We will continue to serve our local community.
•           We still air Car Talk on Saturday mornings.

We hope many of you decide to remain members or become members and support Brookdale Public Radio, 90.5 The NIGHT.

Station Manager

BLUEGRASS JAM LISTENERS

To all of the Listeners of Bluegrass Jam at 90.5 The Night:

First of all we (Randy, Heidi and Ken) would like to acknowledge all of the emails, phone calls, and other correspondences to each of us and the management of 90.5 The Night! One thing’s for certain, there is a lot of passion for the program and that was felt very strongly by the sudden change in programming these past few weeks! We have recently met with Cheryl Cummings (Director of the Brookdale Network) and Tom Brennan (Station Mgr) to discuss the future of Bluegrass Jam. Cheryl had taken the time to read every one of the emails sent to her and to Tom Brennan. She also took the time to look up the membership status of each person and found that only about 25% of them were active members! She explained that from an overall perspective, memberships have gone down over the past year or so and the costs for doing business (like our taxes) have risen! The discussion was very “healthy” but very “sobering” to say the least! None of us realized the fiscal status we were in and discussed plans to increase the membership of the listeners of Bluegrass Jam in order to validate our being part of the programming of 90.5 the night.

The outcome of this discussion was good news because it was decided to extend the duration of the program from one hour to two hours! The Hours will be 9-11am, which may be a little early for some but we think it’s a nice compromise! Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we are determined to increase the membership of the listeners of Bluegrass Jam and the awareness of our Bluegrass program! We cannot over emphasize the fact that 90.5 the night is “Listener Supported Public Radio”. We appreciate your passion for the program that you have enjoyed for 26 years; however the bottom line is that in order for us to be able to sustain Bluegrass Jam for now and the future we really need those listeners who are not members to consider becoming members! In closing we would like to thank all of you that are active members for your continued support of Bluegrass Jam and would like to thank in advance all of our listeners for their consideration in becoming new members or renewing members. With all of us working together we can enjoy Bluegrass Jam for many years to come!!!!! As always your suggestions are welcome. We hope to hear from you soon!!! We are here for you, our loyal listeners. Now we come to you, asking that you be here for us!!!! Again, thanks for your continued support!

Randy Bailey, Heidi Olsen and Ken Jewell

ALBUM OF THE MONTH

Norah Jones Not Too Late

Norah Jones has just released her third album, Not Too Late. It’s her first album with all original compositions. Her first album without the legendary producer Arif Mardin (who passed away last year). Her first without using a slew of top shelf studio musicians. A little less “jazzy” than in the past, but still the perfect kind of record for a Sunday afternoon or a really late night. Using her usual band of Lower East Side friends (with a few exceptions), I suppose the album “feels” more like a band record. After being part of a band over the last couple of years (The Little Willies) it would seem that she’s found a comfort zone in playing with them. You’ve no doubt already heard the first single “Thinking About You,” the album also boasts a number of distinctly “not jazzy” numbers like the Tom Waits-ian “Sinkin’ Soon” and the overtly political “My Dear Country.” While Not Too Late is perhaps not as “immediate” a record as its predecessors, it is a distinct next step in the maturation of Norah Jones as an artist.
