Jeffrey Gaines – Promise Of Passion

Jeffrey Gaines returns with a brand new album, his first studio release since “Toward The Sun”. Since his debut album in 1992, Gaines has been a vital and electrifying force in music, capable of dazzling audiences worldwide with just his own voice and acoustic guitar. On his new project, “Alright”, he takes that innate gift as an individual and combines it with the undeniable musicianship of some of the best players on the planet. Pete Thomas & Davey Faragher, of Elvis Costello’s group The Imposters, provide the foundation as the rhythm section, and Val McCallum, known for his stellar guitar work with everyone from Jackson Browne to Lucinda Williams, plays guitar. Val, Pete and Davey are also collectively known as Jackshit, and their live performances are legendary affairs. That chemistry is brought to the fore on this new album in exciting ways.

Helmed by producer/singer-songwriter Chris Price, the resulting collection is called “Alright”. 10 songs spanning a variety of sounds and scenes, held together by Jeffrey’s gifts as a singer, melodicist and lyricist, and performed with the kind of fervor that can only be generated by a group of musicians playing in the room together. The entirety of the backing tracks was recorded in a marathon 3-day session in August 2017, and the immediacy is apparent from the first notes. Songs like “Feel Alright” and “Frowned Upon” showcase an artist working at the peak of his powers, surrounded by a crack band that props up the tracks with deeply complimentary playing.

BEN HARPER & CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE – Found The One

GRAMMY-Award winning, multiplatinum-selling artists Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite will collaborate once again for their new album No Mercy in This Land, due out March 30, 2018.

No Mercy in This Land is the first of new music from the pair since the 2013 release of their collaborative album Get Up!, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Blues Albums Chart and won a GRAMMY Award in 2014 for “Best Blues Album.” A musical expression of the kinship between the two, the album recounts both Ben and Charlie’s personal stories and adds to the sonic history of American struggle and survival.

“Charlie Musselwhite is that very rare and hallowed place where blues past, present and future collide,” says Ben about his collaborator and friend. “He transforms notes into emotions that feel both hauntingly familiar and brand new, as if hearing them for the first time every time. He is a living legend whose harmonica playing should be beamed into outer space to search for other life forms.”

“On stage or in the studio – working with Ben Harper holds the same excitement I experienced working with Chicago blues legends back in the day,” says Charlie. “I think it is safe to say that Ben has reinvented the Blues in a great way: playing modern while preserving the feel. I am honored and privileged to be a participant in this project.”

Buffalo Tom – All Be Gone

Boston-based indie faves Buffalo Tom, having recently wrapped an acclaimed run of sold out U.S. and U.K. shows marking the 25th anniversary of their alt-rock masterpiece Let Me Come Over, have confirmed their first new album in six years, Quiet and Peace, via Scrawny/Schoolkids Records. The compelling 11-song set finds the trio—singer-guitarist Bill Janovitz, bassist-vocalist Chris Colbourn and drummer Tom Maginnis—simultaneously mining their best-known sonic elements while breaking new ground on emotionally resonant new tunes such as “All Be Gone,” “Overtime,” “Roman Cars,” “Freckles” and “CatVMouse.”

Full of nostalgic and dusky imagery, much of Quiet And Peace emerges from New England’s less visited darker corners, offering a sort-of poetic travelogue of faded colors and woods illuminated in the light of the seaside. Buffalo Tom’s first collection since 2011’s Skins, Quiet and Peace was mixed by John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady) and marks the band’s first collaboration with producer and fellow Boston alt-rock legend David Minehan, renowned ex-leader of the Neighborhoods.

Dumptruck – Money

Dumptruck, formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1983 by guitarists and singers Seth Tiven and Kirk Swan, is – for lack of a better turn of a phrase—the band that wouldn’t die. Coming quickly out of the gate in the college radio heyday that was the early 1980s, critics and fans alike responded to Tiven and Swan’s earliest efforts, 1984’s D is for Dumptruck and 1986’s Positively Dumptruck, with rave reviews.

A following quickly grew, but the wear and tear of years on the road led to Swan deciding to part ways with the band in late ’86. Tiven, faced with calling it quits or carrying on did the only thing he knew to do—soldier on. Now based out of Austin, Texas and with a rotating collection of steady bandmates, Tiven has released four studio albums in the years since.

From 1987’s critically acclaimed for the country to 2001’s muscular Lemmings Travel to the Sea, Tiven has stayed true to his original muse—powerfully personal songs floating on an endless wave of driving guitar. Wrecked is the first album of new material from Dumptruck in 17 years.

Jason Morton & The Chesapeake Sons – Before It Gets Better

Jason Morton and The Chesapeake Sons owes their geographical roots to the Atlantic seaboard, but its sonic heritage connects the band firmly to The Black Crowes, the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Marshall Tucker Band.

With Jason Morton and The Chesapeake Sons, a 10-track collection on indie Copperline Music Group, the four-piece ensemble blends effusive melodies, fierce musicianship, convicted vocals, and smart lyrics in a diverse song stew that dips – in Southern-rock fashion – into rock, blues, country, gospel, and even psychedelia.

Benjamin Cartel – Coast Town

Benjamin Cartel is no stranger to making music that quickly connects with its listeners. That’s something he’s always excelled at, first with the substantial attention and acclaim accorded his duo Kaiser Cartel, and then, with a return to his solo career. To date, the latter has yielded two highly acclaimed efforts, an EP called Money and Love and a full length outing entitled Gothenberg, each of which helped broaden his reputation while underscoring his obvious ambitions.

With Cartel’s upcoming release, Flickering Light, he moves the needle even further, opening up a sonic palette that not only reflects his expansive musical vision, but also reflects his attention to craft and detail through astute, articulate arrangements and a sound that’s both stirring and sublime. Co-produced by longtime colleague Mike Cohen and recorded at Trout Studios in Brooklyn (home to recordings by Evan Dando and Joan as Police Woman) and Flower Studios in Minneapolis (which birthed records by The Replacements and The Jayhawks), the new album found Cartel intimately involved in every detail of the process. With Cartel playing guitar and drums, Cohen contributing guitar and Kieren Mulvaney anchoring the proceedings on bass, the results verify that fact that Flickering Light is easily Cartel’s greatest achievement yet.
