Fantastic Negrito – Plastic Hamburgers

Fantastic Negrito is the incarnation of a musician who is reborn after going through a lot of awful stuff. In fact, the name Fantastic Negrito represents his third rebirth, literally coming back from death this time. The narrative on this man is as important as the sound, because the narrative is the sound. Songs born from a long hard life channeled through black roots music.

Slide guitar, drums, piano. Urgent, desperate, edgy. Fantastic Negrito is the story of a man who struggled to “make it”, who “got it”, and who lost it all. For anyone who ever felt like it was over yet hoped it wasn’t, this is your music; blues harnessed, forged in realness. For anyone who ever considered getting their old high-school band back together, this is your inspiration.

These are singular songs by a true musician who writes and produces. They are his fuel as he embarks on the third comeback of his life.

Albert Hammond Jr – Far Away Truths

Albert Hammond Jr’s fourth solo album Francis Trouble explores a deeply personal topic – the stillborn death of his twin brother, Francis, and the lingering effects that event has had in his life and music.
In November of 1979, Hammond Jr’s mother, Claudia, miscarried. Although they rushed to the hospital, Claudia and Albert Hammond Sr. were told that the baby was far too premature to live. Albert continued to grow inside of his mother undetected until she was nearly six months pregnant.
Although he had always known of the existence of Francis, it was not until he was 36 years old that he learned from an aunt that part of Francis had remained behind in the womb and was born along side him – a fingernail.
With his music moving in a different path than before, Hammond Jr wondered if this new direction came from another avenue of himself, perhaps emanating from whatever he and the departed Francis had shared for the few short months they had together.
Taking a page from Bowie, Hammond Jr says: “What the music says may be serious, but as a medium it should not be questioned, analyzed or taken too seriously. I think it should be tarted up, made into a character, a parody of itself. The music is the mask the message wears and I, the performer, am the message.”
Working within this mentality, Hammond Jr created Francis Trouble, an homage to both the death of his twin and his own birth, as well as the complexities of identity that arise because of their intermingling. The number 36 became especially relevant, as he had learned more of Francis’s story at that age, and because he was born on the 9th day of the 4th month of the year. Significantly, the album is exactly 36 minutes long.

Jeffrey Gaines – Promise Of Passion

Jeffrey Gaines returns with a brand new album, his first studio release since “Toward The Sun”. Since his debut album in 1992, Gaines has been a vital and electrifying force in music, capable of dazzling audiences worldwide with just his own voice and acoustic guitar. On his new project, “Alright”, he takes that innate gift as an individual and combines it with the undeniable musicianship of some of the best players on the planet. Pete Thomas & Davey Faragher, of Elvis Costello’s group The Imposters, provide the foundation as the rhythm section, and Val McCallum, known for his stellar guitar work with everyone from Jackson Browne to Lucinda Williams, plays guitar. Val, Pete and Davey are also collectively known as Jackshit, and their live performances are legendary affairs. That chemistry is brought to the fore on this new album in exciting ways.

Helmed by producer/singer-songwriter Chris Price, the resulting collection is called “Alright”. 10 songs spanning a variety of sounds and scenes, held together by Jeffrey’s gifts as a singer, melodicist and lyricist, and performed with the kind of fervor that can only be generated by a group of musicians playing in the room together. The entirety of the backing tracks was recorded in a marathon 3-day session in August 2017, and the immediacy is apparent from the first notes. Songs like “Feel Alright” and “Frowned Upon” showcase an artist working at the peak of his powers, surrounded by a crack band that props up the tracks with deeply complimentary playing.

BEN HARPER & CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE – Found The One

GRAMMY-Award winning, multiplatinum-selling artists Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite will collaborate once again for their new album No Mercy in This Land, due out March 30, 2018.

No Mercy in This Land is the first of new music from the pair since the 2013 release of their collaborative album Get Up!, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Blues Albums Chart and won a GRAMMY Award in 2014 for “Best Blues Album.” A musical expression of the kinship between the two, the album recounts both Ben and Charlie’s personal stories and adds to the sonic history of American struggle and survival.

“Charlie Musselwhite is that very rare and hallowed place where blues past, present and future collide,” says Ben about his collaborator and friend. “He transforms notes into emotions that feel both hauntingly familiar and brand new, as if hearing them for the first time every time. He is a living legend whose harmonica playing should be beamed into outer space to search for other life forms.”

“On stage or in the studio – working with Ben Harper holds the same excitement I experienced working with Chicago blues legends back in the day,” says Charlie. “I think it is safe to say that Ben has reinvented the Blues in a great way: playing modern while preserving the feel. I am honored and privileged to be a participant in this project.”

Buffalo Tom – All Be Gone

Boston-based indie faves Buffalo Tom, having recently wrapped an acclaimed run of sold out U.S. and U.K. shows marking the 25th anniversary of their alt-rock masterpiece Let Me Come Over, have confirmed their first new album in six years, Quiet and Peace, via Scrawny/Schoolkids Records. The compelling 11-song set finds the trio—singer-guitarist Bill Janovitz, bassist-vocalist Chris Colbourn and drummer Tom Maginnis—simultaneously mining their best-known sonic elements while breaking new ground on emotionally resonant new tunes such as “All Be Gone,” “Overtime,” “Roman Cars,” “Freckles” and “CatVMouse.”

Full of nostalgic and dusky imagery, much of Quiet And Peace emerges from New England’s less visited darker corners, offering a sort-of poetic travelogue of faded colors and woods illuminated in the light of the seaside. Buffalo Tom’s first collection since 2011’s Skins, Quiet and Peace was mixed by John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady) and marks the band’s first collaboration with producer and fellow Boston alt-rock legend David Minehan, renowned ex-leader of the Neighborhoods.
