The Pixies – Bel Esprit

pixiesFor the first time since their very early days, the Pixies spent a total of six weeks in pre-production, writing, arranging and rehearsing a plethora of songs. Between the band’s late-80s/early 90s touring schedule and delivering an album once a year, there simply wasn’t time for more than a day or so of fleshing out their music before recording started.
‘This was a wonderful luxury, for us to have the time to be able to really work these new songs out,’ said Pixies drummer David Lovering. ‘By the time we started recording, we all knew the songs backwards and forwards, so it took half as long for us to make this album as it did to make ‘Indie Cindy.’ And it was great working with Tom…he started with us in pre-production and played a big part in keeping us focused on making the best music we could.’
In addition, the band – Lovering, rhythm guitarist/vocalist Black Francis and guitarist Joey Santiago – officially welcome bassist Paz Lenchantin to the Pixies’ permanent line-up. Lenchantin has been the band’s touring bassist since January 2014, and played an integral part in the recording of Head Carrier. Her cool and dreamy soprano can be heard singing lead on the track ‘All I Think About Now.’
All songs were written by the Pixies apart from ‘All I Think About Now,’ which was written by Francis and Lenchantin.

Hidden Cities – Face In The Crowd

hiddencitiesHidden Cities is a NYC-based band of late night dreamers with a shared love for the sounds of the streets and a sweaty dance floor. Harnessing the frenzied energy of a city in transit, their songs recall urban life through stories of adventure and true love.
Their collective songwriting effort yields haunting, catchy melodies over dueling guitars and bouncing rhythm & bass, occasionally punctuated by Stax style horns. The percussive, energetic Hidden Cities sound is perfect for pre-party rituals before heading out into the night.
Their second record The Strange features their unique blend of boozy bluesy rock songs that evoke nostalgia for a city life that once was and for love once lost, while keeping listeners too busy dancing to dwell.

Thorcraft Cobra – Killing Time

ThorcraftCobra_300x300First off, despite their righteously badass nom de artiste Thorcraft Cobra are not purveyors of weed-hazed, beer-soaked SoCal Throttle Rock. Together, Billy Zimmer (Brown Eyed Susans) and Tammy Glover (Sparks) combine a knack for concise pop songwriting, a gift for crafting immediately engaging melody, and impeccable taste in rock and roll sonics into something that is both fresh and undeniable.
Zimmer and Glover first crossed paths when their respective acts were signed to the same label. “I started as a fan of his guitar tone” relates Glover, “but quickly fell for his wit and songwriting skills.” Their partnership coalesced when Zimmer decided to play a few demos he was working on for his labelmate. “I wasn’t super confident in it at all, to be perfectly honest. Then I played the songs for Tammy, and she was like, “whhhaaatttt”. And told me that it was good, and that she should play drums on it and we should put it out” explains Zimmer. “She also pointed at one of my vintage amps and asked, “What’s that?” “That’s my Thorcraft Cobra,” I told her. “That’s what we should call the band,” she said. I did not argue!”

Ha Ha Tonka – Everything

HaHaTonkaOver their history, Ha Ha Tonka has recorded four critically acclaimed albums, toured the world, played Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, and appeared on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations. Through it all, these Ozarks natives have made friends, found love, started familes, and grown and matured together. Heart-Shaped Mountain is a reflection of that development and maturity. Once aptly summed as “Indie-Americana, where Alabama meets Arcade Fire, ” Ha Ha Tonka has expanded their sonic palette, unveiling balanced, sublime, pop radio accessible heights and an emotionally broader, post-punk songwriting range, a la Apache Relay or a less enigmatic Jonsi, while keeping their trademark harmonizing vocals, jangly Southern revelry and crunchy hooks fully in tact. At it’s core, Heart-Shaped Mountain is an album about love and growth. At a time when divisiveness fills the headlines, Ha Ha Tonka is fighting the good fight, building narrative-tributes to friends and loved ones, memories past and prospects of the future.

BNQT – Restart

bnqt editBNQT, a new indie super group conceived and led by Eric Pulido of Midlake, have announced the release of their debut album ‘Volume 1’ on April 28 via Dualtone, and Entertainment One company. The introductory set includes ten new, original songs and features five vocalists – Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses, Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Fran Healy of Travis, Jason Lytle of Granddaddy, and Pulido – who wrote and sing two tracks each, with backing from other Midlake members McKenzie Smith (drums), Joey McClellan (guitar) and Jesse Chandler (keys). ‘Volume 1’ was recorded and produced mostly at their studio in Denton, TX. The concept of BNQT (pronounced “Banquet”) came to Pulido while touring for Midlake’s 2013 release, ‘Antiphon.’ Gathering a number of contrasting yet complementary artists he’d befriended or shared the stage with, Pulido set out to establish a new creative environment untethered from other work – “Like a poor man’s version of the Traveling Wilburys!” he says.

The Marcus King Band – Rita Is Gone

marcuskingbandRaised in Greenville, South Carolina, Marcus King was brought up on the blues, playing shows as a pre-teen sideman with his father—bluesman Marvin King, who himself was the son of a regionally-known guitarist—before striking out on his own. Going beyond the sonic textures of his acclaimed 2015 debut album, Soul Insight; The Marcus King Band broadens his sound, touching upon everything from funky R&B to Southern soul and Americana in the process. His band gets in on the action too, stacking the songs with blasts of swampy brass, a lock-step rhythm section and swirling organ. Ever the multi-tasker, King bounces between several instruments, handling electric and acoustic guitar — as well as pedal and lap steel — while driving each track home with his soulful, incendiary voice.

The Record Company – Baby, I’m Broken

The Record Company write and play raw, sincere rock n’ roll. Influenced by the rough honesty of their heroes–bluesmen like John Lee Hooker, early punk bands like The Stooges, and rock greats like The Rolling Stones–their sound incorporates slide guitar, distorted bass, a garage-sale Ludwig drum kit and the heartland-hued voice of Chris Vos, who grew up on a Wisconsin dairy farm. The three-man group started in late 2011, hanging up some old mics and recording live in the bass player’s living room in Los Feliz, CA. The Record Company have since played concert halls across North America, opening for acts as diverse as B.B. King, Social Distortion, Buddy Guy, Grace Potter, and Trombone Shorty.

Jeb Loy Nichols – That’s How We’re Living

Jeb Loy Nichols Jeb Loy Nichols originally hails from Missouri and has lived in Texas, New York and London. He has a fascinating, Zelig-like story, all of which feeds into his authentic, experience-infused music. He caught an original Sex Pistols show in Texas, danced to Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage and witnessed Bambaataa rock Bronx blocks.
He worked in New York’s Record City, selling obscure James Brown singles to Prince Paul, and Fela Kuti vinyl to Brian Eno and David Byrne – just before they recorded ‘Remain In Light’. In London he shared a house with Ari Up from The Slits and Neneh Cherry, and forged a bond with Adrian Sherwood amidst the earth shaking ridims of Jah Shaka’s sound system.
This joining-of-the-dots between genres seemingly unrelated to the casual novice has won Jeb high regard from clued up heads, but has also contributed to his occupying a nebulous space within pigeonhole happy popular music. He has steadfastly ploughed his own furrow, navigating a route around mainstream recognition, at times over rocky terrain.

Peter Searcy – Better Lie

petersearcyPeter Searcy is a musician from Louisville KY. Spin Magazine, Scott Irwin, and Amanda Green have compared Searcy’s straightforward songwriting style and voice to those of Paul Westerberg. Like Paul Westerberg of The Replacements, Searcy is a veteran of the post-punk scene. Searcy was the frontman of the Louisville punk group Squirrel Bait in the 1980s. After Squirrel Bait disbanded, Searcy (along with Squirrel Bait drummer Ben Daughtrey) formed a funk-rock group called Fanci Pantz. After the demise of Fanci Pantz, Searcy joined Big Wheel in 1989, which released three albums before breaking up in 1993. His next band, Starbilly, released only one album, after which Searcy began performing solo. He released one album, “Could You Please and Thank You” in 2000. Its style has been compared to that of the Counting Crows and The Wallflowers. The album was followed by a self-released EP and a second full-length album in 2004, followed by Spark.
