Couple charged in newborn’s death make court appearances

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey woman accused of killing her newborn son has made her initial court appearance, along with the child’s father.

Jada McClain and Quaimere Mohammed did not enter pleas during Wednesday’s hearing in Freehold. Monmouth County prosecutors say McClain admitted giving birth March 29 in her bathroom. They say she then killed her son by pressing her hands on his chest to stop him from breathing. After notifying Mohammed, authorities say the pair drove to an apartment complex in Asbury Park where he allegedly put the remains in a dumpster. McClain, an 18-year-old Neptune Township resident, is charged with murder. She and Mohammed, a 19-year-old Asbury Park resident, are both charged with desecrating human remains. Attorneys for the couple declined comment Wednesday.
