Toms River School Lesson About Slavery Raises Concern

An incident re-enacting slavery in a Toms River school has gotten the attention of some local leaders. Fred Rush, the president of the NAACP of Ocean County said that student reported the scene on Monday that was supposed to be a lesson on the barbarity of slavery. In that lesson, students were asked to lay on the floor of a classroom while a teacher kicked students’ feet and cracked a whip.
The district said none of the students were African American.
Rush told that “It’s not appropriate, no matter who the students are. If it’s wrong, it’s wrong.”
A statement by the Toms River Regional School District said a complaint about the incident was being investigated internally.
