TRENTON – Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) announced today that 10 people – including a temporary Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOL) employee – were indicted in March 2025 for allegedly illegally collecting unemployment benefits and other crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic. These crimes are unrelated to one another but highlight the ongoing investigative and enforcement efforts related to pandemic era frauds.

NORTH BRUNSWICK – Governor Phil Murphy today signed A4755/S3587, which establishes and upgrades certain crimes related to retail theft, provides that repeat offenders can be sentenced to extended prison terms, addresses gift card fraud, and requires the Attorney General to take actions to combat organized retail theft.

TRENTON – Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and the Division of Highway Traffic Safety (HTS) today announced the launch of a high visibility enforcement effort to reduce distracted driving. The campaign, known as “Put the Phone Away or Pay,” runs from April 1 through April 30, and provides funding for law enforcement agencies throughout the state to bolster enforcement of laws prohibiting texting and other forms of distracted driving. In addition to these enforcement efforts, HTS has launched a public awareness campaign to educate drivers about the dangers and consequences of distracted driving.

Middletown, NJ – On Saturday, March 15, 2025 at approximately 6:48 a.m., Middletown Twp. Police responded to 25 Dakarla Drive for a report of a fire. Upon arrival, officers were able to confirm that there was an active structure fire. Units from the Middletown Twp. Fire Department responded to the scene to battle the fire.
